Cutter

Morning light still hasn’t touched the sky when I force myself into a sitting position on my bed. The pain in my arm alternates between throbbing and stinging.

Lovely.

I scrub my hands over my face, the uneven, scarred skin on the right side, raising echoes of the dream. The same one I have every time I sleep since Valentina's been here.

The same day.

The same road.

The same soldiers.

But a different woman.

I never thought I’d have to keep reliving it. One good thing about getting my brain rocked by the explosion is that my memories of that day are locked away deep in the recesses of my mind. They only resurface sporadically in dreams. During waking hours, I typically have to struggle to raise them, and there’s no reason for that.

Milo's deep snoring breaks the silence of the room, and I reach down and scratch his side. His rear leg thumps, and he rolls onto his back completely, giving me full access to his belly.

“I'd love to stay in bed with you all day, buddy, but we have a job to do.”

It's going to take hours to get to where we’re supposed to intercept the Marcella Marie.

That's good and bad.

Good because the chances of there being any water traffic or anyone around to witness or assist is almost nil. Bad because if this is a set-up, it's going to take us a hell of a long time to get back to anything even remotely resembling safety if we need to get the fuck out of there fast.

“What do you think, Milo? Should I bring Valentina along?”

Milo whimpers and lifts his head to look at me with his big brown eyes. His tongue lolls out the side of his mouth, and he rolls onto his stomach and buries his face again to go back to sleep.

“You're no fucking help.”

Even though Warwick, Preacher, E, and Rion all think we should bring her, it's ultimately my decision. As it should be.

When Preacher called us into his office to tell us what he found on her last night, I had thought there would be something, anything to justify my distrust. But everything he found matched what she's already told us.

Valentina Bianchi. Born May 23, 1989, Ponza, Italy. Mother: Esmeralda Bianchi. Employed by the municipal police in Ponza before transferring to Naples. And her immigration paperwork shows she entered the country as a Marconi employee of the scrapyard. They obviously weren't going to list bodyguard to a Mafia Don on the application.

There's absolutely nothing suspicious in her background. Nothing that would warrant the unease in my chest and stomach or the chill in my spine. But I know she's holding something back; I just hope it doesn't get us killed.

Because she’s right—we need another set of hands. And if she's willing to offer them, we would be fools not to take her up on it. We'd be idiots to overlook the fact that we have a common enemy and could team up to eliminate him. She knows the inner workings of the Marconis better than any of us do.
